Challenge Description
In Autism is quite common to design interventions to manage the different needs of an autistic child. The interventions could be design by their therapists, their teachers and their parents in order to develop or train a new skill. The set of interventions are highly personalized and the goals could be absolutely different for each child. Ideally interventions should be track with hard data to see if the skill is gained consistently. At the moment there is no platform that provides the flexibility of define the intervention and its ways of tracking and then allow you to document and evaluate the evolution and effectiveness of the intervention.
The book “From Goals to Data and Back Again: Adding Backbone to Developmental Intervention for Children with Autism” provides a robust methodology The challenge here is using the know-how of the book and implement a solution for tracking purposes.
Challenge Resources
Autism is huge spectrum where all the children shared the same diagnosis, the needs of each child are really specific. Therefore parents, teachers and therapist designed highly personalized developmental interventions that ideally should be measured to see if the developmental milestone is achieved consistently.
The need of communication, easy tracking and share knowledge between the different environments is an important need for parents with children in the autism spectrum.
Application and data architecture design in order to enable the variety of possible interventions that might be designed for children in the spectrum.
A Non-SQL architecture is suggested or a Hibrid-architecture where Non-SQL and SQL databases are aligned to measure the developmental milestones and the interventions effectiveness.
This challenges doesn’t contain data sources since the data itself it would be provided by the users.
It is required a good and robust data architecture design since there are different type of data that might be stored and analyzed during the interventions tracking system.
The solution designs needs to consider that in the tool would be personal information and sensitive data related to the developmental milestone of a child. Security and encriptation of the data should be considered in the design of such app.

Coming soon
During my feedback rounds with other parents with children in the autism spectrum this idea was received with excitement and joy. This is one of the pain areas where we, as parents, several time do not have enough information from the environments where we are not with our children, therefore, bring options its harder.

If we take a developmental approach, autistic children are not the only one that has needs. Also neurotypical children might have special needs during their development and parents and teachers might use such approach to help all children to develop their full potential.
